ZEKE
He woke to the sound of a buzzing he knew was familiar. After a few minutes it stopped, but it registered in his brain that his contact at the government was trying to get in touch with him. O’Keefe could wait.
Right now Zeke was experiencing something he hadn’t felt in so long he couldn’t remember if he had ever felt it in his life.
Contentment. He was blissed out on the high of sex. He had his cat tucked against his body, with her nose pressed against his neck like she couldn’t bear to be an inch from him. All he had to do was take care of El Cabra, eliminate any other bounty hunters who might be on his trail, and then find a way to make that damn chip go away so this kind of shit wouldn’t keep interrupting all the fucking he wanted to do with Eve.
He had no idea what love was. Hadn’t known it from his mother. Never felt it for another person. Chuck had been his friend, his comrade, his brother, but Zeke couldn’t say that was love.
And love certainly wasn’t a feeling necessarily encouraged by the men who trained him to be what he was.
Somebody was putting cigarettes out on his baby’s arm when she was five, so his guess was she didn’t grow up with any warm and fuzzies either. They would have a hard time navigating this. Neither of them were going to know what the hell to do outside of bed, but he’d solved a lot of problems in his day. Zeke figured he could probably solve this one too.
The buzzing started again, and Zeke sighed. O’Keefe was no doubt pitching a fit about the message he’d sent. It was hard to know which way that might fall. When the government had sent Zeke to Colombia to steal the key to El Cabra’s drug network, Zeke had made it clear El Cabra’s head was not on the table. It was simply too risky, and Zeke had thoughts about wanting to live to see his retirement.
He’d take the information, but leave the man alive.
El Cabra should have been grateful for getting away with his life. Zeke knew how it worked down there. You kill one boss and another steps into his place. Everyone was always replaceable. But during that transition a lot of innocent people tended to get killed in the gang wars that sprang up as the new boss tried to volley for power and territory.
Despite the risk it would be to penetrate his security, on El Cabra’s turf, Zeke didn’t see the need for that kind of hassle. He took the thing the government wanted and with it, put a serious dent in El Cabra’s network. But he also kept the man in power to avoid what could have amounted to civil war in the vacuum of the man’s death.
Somehow El Cabra had figured out that Zeke hadn’t turned over the chip to the government. Not that it mattered, who or how.
